The developers announced the release of Logic Pro 12 on their official website. The update is now available for download by all workstation users.
With this release, Logic Pro continues to evolve as a "theoretically conscious" DAW. According to the creators, harmony has become another "control layer" of the project: the Chord Track and Chord ID tracks now show not only triads but also force other instruments and part generators to adjust to them. This quickly turns a loop into a full-fledged arrangement sketch.
Simply drag audio, MIDI, or other content into the project, and Logic will recognize the chords and record them on the Chord Track. This is not just decorative; other tracks can respond to this harmonic grid by adjusting pads, accompaniment, and rhythmic patterns to the chord changes. Essentially, one short loop becomes a "blueprint" for everything else, which is especially useful for intros, transitions, and atmospheric layers when you want to quickly put something together from minimal material.

Internally, the Chord ID feature functions as a musical "translator." It analyzes audio or MIDI material, adds chords to the region and/or Chord Track, and presents the results to the user. For instance, you can apply track chords to regions, or vice versa, or "lift" the harmony from the region to the Chord Track.
Another major innovation is the updated Session Players and a more "musical" step sequencer. According to Apple, both components now use a chord grid to provide tonally related movement automatically, eliminating the need for manual plugin programming.
Logic Pro 12 has updated its virtual "session players." The Keyboard and Bass Players now have Synth Player styles for generating corresponding parts on the synthesizer. Modulated Pad and Rhythmic Chords modes have been added for keyboards and Pump Bass, 808 Bass, and Sequenced Bass modes have been added for bass. The developers stated that they want Logic to generate parts that stay within a given harmony and sound like a meaningful arrangement rather than random MIDI.
The step sequencer has been upgraded so that you can now link rows to chord steps rather than fixed note pitches. There is also extended randomization of patterns and rows, new note repeat parameters, additional playback modes, and pattern lengths of 5/4 and 7/8. The inspectors have been redesigned. These changes allow the rhythm to "breathe" along with the harmony.

The workstation's updated sound library interface makes it easier to view, listen to, and select content for your project. Importantly, the content is now packaged in a "single package" that can be transferred to a local, external, or network drive and shared with multiple users.
The Advanced switch, which expanded the list of available software tools, has been removed. The developers removed the simplified mode, offering users the ability to access all the workstation's features right away.
Logic Pro 12 adds support for spatial audio playback via QuickTime Audio (QTA) files. However, this feature only works on "compatible Macs with macOS 10.16+."
These changes also affect Logic Pro for iPad; version 3.0 has received stability improvements and bug fixes. According to the list of changes, the app now includes integration with the recently launched Apple Creator Studio subscription, new AI-powered session musicians, accelerated processing via swipes, and "smart" loop search using natural language.

Logic Pro 12 is more than just "another set of features." Apple is clearly positioning Logic as an "arrangement accelerator." You start with a basic idea, and then the project unfolds around harmony, with accompaniment, movement, and rhythmic variations that maintain tonality. There's less routine on the grid, and more time for feeling, texture, and track dynamics.
The Logic Pro 12 update is now available for download through the Apple App Store for all users of the software app. The workstation is sold as a standalone application for $199 or as part of an Apple Creative Studio subscription for $12.99 per month.
