Teenage Engineering unveiled the epa-1 - an electric scooter that costs less than the OP-1 field synth

June 18, 2025

Teenage Engineering has begun selling the epa-1 electric scooter. The vehicle was produced in collaboration with the Swedish manufacturer Vässla.

Teenage Engineering was responsible for the design of the vehicle, and Vässla was responsible for its running gear. The scooter's appearance is reminiscent of Teenage Engineering products, which are characterized by a minimalist design.

The vehicle runs on several batteries, reaches speeds of up to 45 km/h, and has a set of mounts for placing storage containers, such as bags and baskets.

The name epa-1 comes from the Swedish phrase "En Passar Alla," which translates to "suitable for all." This name reflects the project's goal of creating a convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly vehicle suitable for everyone.

The two-wheeler's design is built around modularity. The body has 11 attachment points for baskets, bags, and other accessories for transportation and storage. Some parts of the body are also designed for personalization and can be replaced with more colorful parts sold in Vässla's online store.

Teenage Engineering observed that the black color of the electric scooter body resembles the Field System line of musical instruments. The latter became available in a similar black color at the end of May 2025.

The epa-1 is priced on par with Teenage Engineering's other flagship products. According to the official Vässla website, the electric scooter costs 19,990 SEK, equivalent to $2,000. Based on the prices of the electric scooter and the OP-1 field synthesizer in Sweden, it turns out that the epa-1 is cheaper than the company's musical instrument. However, the price imbalance is only corrected if you buy the OP-1 field as part of an experimental promotion with a free price selection.

The cost discrepancy between the two devices has sparked ironic comments and jokes online. Several specialized music media outlets have noted that the fact that an electric scooter is cheaper than a compact synthesizer indicates a fundamental imbalance between technology, design, and cost.

It's worth noting that this isn't the first time the Swedish musical instrument manufacturer has tried its hand at designing everyday items. In 2023, for example, the company launched a line of modular tables and bags.
