The Syntorial course platform has released Primer, a free VST synthesizer for learning

May 15, 2025

Audible Genius has introduced Primer, a virtual synthesizer, to its Syntorial learning platform. This free tool is designed for learning to synthesize.

Primer is a companion to Syntorial, Audible Genius's synthesis and sound training platform. The virtual synthesizer complements the platform's educational materials but can also be used independently for a more visual exploration of concepts.

It is a subtractive synthesizer with a simple, easy-to-learn interface. Aspiring musicians can use it to learn the fundamentals of synthesis.

It is equipped with two main oscillators and a sub-oscillator offering saw, pulse, triangle, and sine waveforms. The instrument supports frequency modulation, oscillator synchronization, and ring modulation.

The plug-in features a multi-mode filter with three envelopes — one for the filter itself, one for the amplifier, and one for the tethered modulation source. Additionally, the tool offers an LFO that can be routed to one of seven parameters.

Primer operates in three different sound modes and has a customizable portamento and unison mode. The latter allows you to control the number of voices and combine and detune them.

The effects section includes a standard set of reverbs, delays, choruses, phasers, and distortions. Additional features include a visualizer that demonstrates signal behavior, a randomizer, and 400 presets.

According to the developers, Primer does not offer anything extraordinary; it is designed to teach beginner musicians the basics of working with synthesizers. According to the creators, the plug-in will also be useful for experienced users.

Primer is available for free in VST and AU formats on the Syntorial platform's official website. To download the plug-in, specify your email address. It is compatible with Windows 10 and later and macOS 10.14 and later (Intel/Apple). The synthesizer is also available as an iPad app and a mobile AUv3 plug-in.
