FabFilter has released an updated version of its compressor – FabFilter Pro-C 3. The plugin features 14 redesigned compression algorithms, improved sidechain handling, new automation modes, and other changes.
According to the developers, the virtual compressor has 14 redesigned algorithms: from the most transparent to those that heavily embellish the signal. The creators have expanded the sidechain capabilities and added new dynamics automation modes. The latter, as noted by the company, are designed for both quick mix preparation and working with complex projects.
At the heart of Pro-C 3 is a set of 14 compressor algorithms, each with its own "focus." Additional operating modes are available for the algorithms, significantly expanding the capabilities and versatility of the plugin.

Depending on the mode, the compressor responds differently to the signal. The plugin adjusts its processing characteristics according to the sound source. Users can select the type of sound source they are working with – vocals, drums, general buses, or sends – which affects the compressor's final behavior.
The plugin also features an Upward Compression function. Together with the Downward Dynamics function, it expands the applicability of FabFilter Pro-C 3: for example, you can not only compress peaks, but also gently boost quiet details, changing the perception of overall density and attack without rough signal pumping.
The compressor has an intelligent auto-gain mode. When activated, the plugin automatically equalizes the level ratio, which "helps maintain dynamics" and eliminates the need for constant manual volume compensation.
In addition to Auto Gain, the plugin now features Automatic Threshold Selection. According to the developers, this allows Pro-C 3 to maintain a consistent level of compression, regardless of the input signal level. The Auto Threshold function is useful for projects with highly variable dynamics because it ensures predictable plugin behavior and eliminates the need for constant threshold adjustments.
The sidechain section has been significantly upgraded. Now, both internal and external sidechains can be processed with "Pro-Q-style filters," including fully transparent all-in variants and Brickwall limiters (96 dB/oct). These innovations are useful for those who want the compressor to respond precisely to specific frequency ranges or squeeze a particular area of the spectrum.

Support for configurations up to 9.1.6 has been added for complex projects, making the compressor suitable for modern immersive projects in addition to stereo mixes. Pro-C 3 also features Host Tempo Triggering, which allows the compressor to be linked to the project tempo for a more rhythmic mix.
The developers clarified that they adjusted the lookahead and variable knee behavior. These changes aim to provide more accurate and delicate processing of even the slightest sound nuances.
Visually, Pro-C 3 adheres to FabFilter's signature design philosophy with a scalable interface offering both detailed and simplified displays. The graphics provide real-time feedback on signal levels, as well as on attack and release.
The plugin offers additional Character Mode processing modes previously seen in other FabFilter products. These modes can be used to add analog saturation – Tube, Diode, and Bright – to mix in harmonics without using separate saturators.

Another important innovation is the integration of the FabFilter effects chain into the modular concept. Users can control all instances of Pro-C 3, Pro-DS, Pro-Q 4, and Pro-G in a single window, monitor processing, and quickly configure multiple instances of different plugins without switching windows. All this will make it easier to work in large and complex sessions, the company notes.
The plugin is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. The compressor is compatible with Windows 10 and newer, macOS 13 and newer (Intel/Apple) operating systems.
FabFilter Pro-C 3 is now available for purchase. The regular price of the effect is $199. More details about the plugin can be found on the FabFilter official website.
