Roland has released Boss Effects Pedals Plugin: 8 official virtual stompboxes in your DAW

May 20, 2025

Information about the release of the BOSS Effects Pedals plugin set was posted on the official Roland website. The collection includes eight effects.

This release marks the first official emulations of Japanese guitar pedals. Previously, the manufacturer's devices were available as copies under different names in guitar emulators, such as AmpliTube and Guitar Rig, and as separate plugins from third-party developers.

According to the description, the collection includes eight devices:

  1. SD-1 Overdrive;
  2. PH-1 Phaser;
  3. SP-1 Spectrum;
  4. SG-1 Slow Gear;
  5. CS-1 Compression Sustainer;
  6. TW-1 T-Wah;
  7. OD-1 Overdrive;
  8. DS-1 Distortion.

Each pedal is a separate plug-in with its own set of settings. The controls are identical to those on real pedal bodies.

The developers do not specify whether the number of pedals in the set will increase over time. Considering that about 140 different stompboxes have been released under the BOSS brand, it's possible that Roland will digitize each of them sooner or later.

Boss Effects Pedals Plugin Interface

Here's the catch! Despite the announcement, not all users can access the kit. The BOSS Effects Pedals Plugin is not sold as a standalone product; it is only available as part of a Roland Cloud subscription. Subscriptions start at $19.99 per month or $199 per year.

New subscribers can use the Virtual Pedal Kit with other Roland Cloud plugins and synthesizers for 30 days. After the trial period ends, users will be prompted to pay for the subscription.

BOSS Effects Pedals are available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. These plug-ins are compatible with Windows 10 and later and macOS 12 and later (Intel/Apple) operating systems. Visit the official Roland website for more details about this plugin.

Comment from SoundGale Editorial Team

So, let's figure out if the Boss Effects Pedals plugin is worth the money. First, we're happy about the 30-day trial period, which allows you to check out the sound of these pedals. You can also check out all the other Roland Cloud products included in the subscription. If you like the virtual pedals, synthesizers, and sample packs from Roland Cloud, you can boldly subscribe for a year.

However, if you're a guitarist who only wants the sound of BOSS virtual pedals, paying for a year's subscription might not be worth it. There are better solutions from IK Multimedia, such as TONEX MAX, which offers emulations of guitar cabinets, amplifiers, effects pedals, and more. Amplitube TONEX MAX costs $299, but there are often discounts, and you can buy it for $99. This emulator is sold as a one-time payment, not a subscription (the developers are also rolling out free updates). But the best deal is to buy TONEX PEDAL (read our review at the link) for $349 and you will get free TONEX MAX emulator with BOSS pedals and 1,250+ premium tone models.
