Today we have the Arturia MiniBrute 2S synthesizer on review and we'll take a look at what this device can do. The Arturia MiniBrute 2S is a modified version of the MiniBrute 2 synthesizer, with pads instead of musical keys and a built-in step sequencer.
With the introduction of the MiniBrute 2's semi-modular architecture, the use of a synthesizer as a musical instrument in the traditional sense is no longer the defining feature of the MiniBrute 2. A wide range of signal routing and modulation options are now available, allowing you to create an original, dynamically variable sound. The semi-modular principle now allows you to connect all kinds of additional modules to the synthesizer and use the MiniBrute 2 in the most unimaginable sets.
In modern progressive electronic music, the melodic component gives way to a constant development of simple, repetitive rhythmic phrases. It is a pity that many musicians and sound producers consider the rich possibilities of modulation as the only means of expression and sometimes it becomes an end in itself in their musical creations. With this approach to creating musical content, a synthesizer equipped with a step-by-step sequencer is much more appealing and relevant than a traditional keyboard. The Arturia MiniBrute 2S is a timely response to the legitimate expectations of the music community. And before we get to the features, let's start our Arturia MiniBrute 2S review with the specs as usual.

The MiniBrute 2S is based on the same MiniBrute 2 unit with all its unique synthesis features. We won't describe its structure again, as there are no differences between the synthesizers. You can find all the necessary information in our MiniBrute 2 review. Let's continue our Arturia MiniBrute 2S review with the features of the built-in sequencer.
Like all Arturia instruments, the MiniBrute 2S synthesizer is easy to use and simple to operate. All the necessary settings and modes are labeled and right in front of you.
The MiniBrute 2S synthesizer has two main modes: the main sequencer mode and an additional arpeggiator mode.
The sequencer mode allows you to create up to 64 different sequences stored in the synthesizer's memory. For easy selection, the sequences are organized into four banks labeled A, B, C, D, with 16 patterns in each bank. You can play patterns individually or chain them together by configuring a sequence of any 16 patterns.
Each sequence can be up to 64 beats long. You can navigate through groups of 16 beats using the 16, 32, 48, and 64 buttons. There is also a tracking mode that automatically switches to the active Pad group during playback.
On the bottom of the MiniBrute 2S synthesizer are 16 pads with fretless controls. The pads are equipped with multi-position backlights that indicate tempo and parameter changes. The pads are force responsive and have an aftertouch function similar to the aftertouch mode on MIDI keyboards. You can assign an additional parameter to them for control, such as another modulation or filter setting. Interestingly, instead of assigning a single parameter to all of the pads, you can assign an individual parameter to each pad.
The operation of the sequencer is not fundamentally different from many similar hardware devices. However, the MiniBrute 2S has a number of unique features. In fact, the sequencer in the synthesizer is multi-layered. This means that for each sequencer there are four tracks that are recorded in parallel, allowing you to transmit separate additional parameters for each note played, sometimes independently of the current rhythmic pattern. The first two tracks represent the pitch and gate information of the note and cannot be changed. The other two tracks are independent and can be configured separately from the main sequencer. They send additional control data through the Patchbay. The Velocity and Pressure parameters are assigned to them by default, but can be reassigned. There are 12 additional parameters to choose from, including control voltage and the value of various types of LFOs.
The encoders above the pads control all of these assigned parameters. Each control corresponds to a specific note in the sequence and is instantly available to adjust the current value. The encoders are frictionless and numbered for ease of use.
By default, the pads are assigned a chromatic sequence from the C minor octave note to the C major octave note. The pads even have a schematic layout, much like a musical keyboard. Of course, the entire sequence can be strummed to any interval within a six-octave range. To make playing easier, the pads can be set to a specific fret to avoid dissonant harmonies. You can choose from traditional major and minor scales, Dorian and Mixolydian scales, harmonic minor, blues scales, and a custom preset with a configurable set of notes.
There are several synchronization options for tempo matching: USB, MIDI, internal or external cloak. A metronome mode is provided for convenient playing. Playback speed is adjustable from 30 to 240 beats per minute. It is also possible to set an arbitrary tempo using the Tap button. You can set a unique tempo for each sequencer, or assign a current value to all sequencers that corresponds to the overall tempo.
The Arpeggiator lets you play a chord arpeggio consisting of 16 sounds. There are several playback options: up, down, up and down, up and down, up chord inversion, two notes up, two notes down, and random. The arpeggiator and sequencer can be used simultaneously. In this case, the arpeggiator will be active as long as the pads are held down, then the sequencer will continue to play. Also of note is the interesting Loop mode, which allows you to loop a desired range of beats within a sequencer.
For connecting the synthesizer, there is a line output with a mono 1/4 TRS jack and a powerful headphone output. The USB port is used to interact with your DAW and to send or receive an external clock. In addition, the USB connection allows access to deeper synth settings via Arturia's proprietary MIDI Control Center utility.
Just like the original MiniBrute 2, the synthesizer's body has special holes for attaching Arturia's proprietary RackBrute stands. They include everything you need to install and connect compatible modules, as well as a convenient handle for carrying the entire system. The racks will be available in two sizes: 3U, as shown, and an extended 6U version. The racks are sold separately and are not included in the kit.
The sequencer modification of the MiniBrute 2S synthesizer fits in well with Arturia's new modular ideology. Although the MiniBrute 2S is still a full-fledged synthesizer, the modular concept makes pads look more appropriate than musical keys. As for the capabilities of the built-in sequencer, they are realized at a high professional level. The MiniBrute 2S can rightfully be considered one of the most advanced synthesizers of our time.
