Arturia MiniBrute 2 Noir Edition Review

July 16, 2024

Today we have a short review of the Arturia MiniBrute 2 Noir Edition synthesizer. Unfortunately, we won't describe all the features of this synthesizer in detail, because we already have a long and detailed review of the classic version of Arturia MiniBrute 2 (you can read it at the link). Basically, we will go over the main features of this model and talk about the differences from the classic version of the MiniBrute 2.

The MiniBrute 2 is the second generation of Arturia's popular analog synthesizer to feature a semi-modular architecture. Combining the traditional principle with modular controls, the MiniBrute 2 is a unique instrument that can be used as a stand-alone synthesizer or as part of a modular configuration. This versatility allows the MiniBrute 2 to appeal to a wide range of audiences, from beginners and analog sound enthusiasts to advanced modular synthesis users. At the same time, the synthesizer remains relatively easy to use and affordable.

Overall Build and Features

So let's start the main part of our Arturia MiniBrute 2 Noir Edition review and briefly go over all the interesting features of this device. The MiniBrute 2 was released in 2018 as a long-awaited update to Arturia's first hardware synthesizer. At the moment, the series of devices already counts seven varieties of Brute synthesizers, from the compact MicroBrute to the elaborate MatrixBrute with presets and modulation matrix and its polyphonic version PolyBrute.

The manufacturer has traditionally released limited editions in alternative color schemes to stimulate interest in its devices. In early 2022, the Noir Edition synthesizers appeared on sale, which differed from the original version of the black coloring of the body, including the side decorative panels.

MiniBrute 2 is a monophonic synthesizer. Its main oscillator is in the form of a whole set of different wave types, which can be smoothly adjusted to form not only classic shapes, but also their various combinations. Control is very simple. With the help of miniature faders you can set the value of the corresponding waveform and get the result of their interaction at the output. In addition, it is possible to mix the signal from an external source and a second oscillator, which can also serve as an additional modulator of the main oscillator.

The settings of the main oscillator provide individual variations for each waveform. For a saw waveform, a phase-shifted waveform duplication, the Ultrasaw Amt, is provided. For a meander waveform, the pulse width is adjustable. And for a triangle waveform, the Metalizer adjusts the saturation of the spectrum with harmonics. The additional oscillator settings are more modest. There are three fixed waveforms available with oscillation frequency adjustment.

Two identical oscillators with a choice of waveforms and frequency control act as LFOs. For convenience, synchronization with the tempo of the built-in arpeggiator is provided.

The MiniBrute 2 uses two envelopes. The ADSR ENVELOPE section controls the filter envelope. And the AD ENVELOPE controls the amplitude of the signal. The independent operation of these two envelopes results in an interesting, dynamically changing sound.

The recognizable sound of Arturia synthesizers is largely determined by the Steiner-Parker bipolar filter, which has a distinctive coloration, and of course the signature Brute Factor saturator, which allows you to saturate the timbre with specific distortions caused by the amplifier's self-excitation. The filter has four modes and can be modulated. The modulation parameters are amplitude, resonance and cutoff frequency. By default, these parameters are already assigned to the sources corresponding to the labels. However, they can be assigned to any other parameters using the CV/Gate connection.

The most typical examples of the synthesizer's sound, as well as changes in the sound when adjusting key synthesis parameters, can be found on the manufacturer's official site.

One of the key features of MiniBrute 2 is the CV/Gate control panel, which significantly expands the possibilities of the synthesizer and creates a wide field for experimentation. With its help, you can assign almost any control parameter to available modulation sources. The kit comes with 8 short patchcord cables that can be used to create the necessary chain. All sources are labeled for easy connection, so even novices can connect the cable correctly and get an original sound. Of course, you can do more than just use the synthesizer's built-in features. The MiniBrute 2 allows you to use any external compatible modules and synthesizers to control and modulate all available parameters.

The MiniBrute 2 can be used in modular configurations or in multi-synthesizer sets with rich synchronization options. The synthesizer can act as both a source and a receiver. In addition to the internal clock, synchronization via USB, MIDI and TRS interfaces is available.

The first version of the synthesizer only had an arpeggiator. In addition to the updated arpeggiator, MiniBrute 2 has added a sequencer. It allows you to create 8 different sequences of up to 64 beats. The capabilities of the built-in sequencer are rather modest, but it allows you to edit sequences in real time, use ligated notes, and transpose melodies with a single key.

The MiniBrute 2 synthesizer uses a full-sized two-octave keyboard. It features velocity-sensitive synthesizer mechanics and aftertouch, which can be used as an additional control and modulation parameter. Traditionally, Arturia instruments use a good and fairly durable keyboard. Despite the fact that the MiniBrute 2 uses synthesizer-like mechanics, the tactile feel is very pleasant.

All connections are located on the front panel. The line output is realized on a TRS connector and is combined with the headphone output. To use the synthesizer with other devices via MIDI protocol, there is a full-featured MIDI input and output with five-pin 5 DIN connectors. The synthesizer's USB port is required to connect to a computer and interact with the unit via the proprietary MIDI Control Center utility, giving you access to detailed synthesizer settings and arpeggiator/sequencer patterns.

Minibrute 2 with Eurorack housing RackBrute

As before, the MiniBrute 2 can be equipped with a special Eurorack RackBrute stand that attaches directly to the synthesizer. For this purpose there are special holes on the sides of the case. These racks have everything you need to install Eurorack modules and are available in two sizes, 3U as shown in the photo, and an extended 6U version. The design of the rack is foldable, allowing you to install the equipment at a convenient angle, and has a carrying handle. In addition, there is a special carrying bag in which the whole design fits safely in the folded form. Unfortunately, the RackBrute is presented in the unchanged color scheme under light wood, as shown on the photo.

Final Verdict on Arturia MiniBrute 2 Noir Edition

The Arturia MiniBrute 2 synthesizer, like all the other hardware synthesizers from the French manufacturer, looks extremely interesting and very convincing. It has a characteristic rich and bright timbre, typical of iron synthesizers, which will appeal to lovers of natural analog sounds. Thanks to its many features, the MiniBrute 2 synthesizer has a very rich creative potential.

Another advantage of the MiniBrute 2 is its simple and well thought-out control, which allows you to work comfortably even in a configuration of several synthesizers and modules. To make the MiniBrute 2 even more appealing to beginners, it comes with a special booklet with explanations and illustrations showing the values of all available knobs and CV/Gate connections to produce a variety of meaningful timbres. So you can start using the synthesizer right away, without having to study such an interesting and exciting field in depth.
