Teenage Engineering OP-1 field is now available at any price point

June 11, 2025

The company announced a program on its official website to sell the Teenage Engineering OP-1 field synthesizer for a free price point. The manufacturer explained that the decision was made in order to make 2025 even more incredible. Despite the fact that users can name their own price, it will unfortunately not be possible to buy the synthesizer for $99.

The program's terms eliminate the fixed price of the OP-1 field synthesizer when purchased through the company's website. Instead, the company is introducing a "Set Your Own Price" model, which allows customers to set their desired price for the instrument.

On the product page, a cost slider appears; moving it changes the final price the customer will pay. Despite stories about free price selection and the desire to provide musicians with an affordable synthesizer, the slider values are limited to a range of $1,399 to $9,999.

It's worth noting that this range gives you the opportunity to purchase the compact instrument at a lower price. The OP-1 Field was introduced in May 2022 with a recommended price of $1,999. Thus, the company is giving users the opportunity to buy the synthesizer for $600 less.

Teenage Engineering noted that the initiative is a neat experiment. Teenage Engineering: "Why did we do it?" - Why not?, the manufacturer says, commenting on the free pricing model that has been introduced.

After using the slider to specify the price, the site checks the synthesizer's availability and then offers to proceed with the standard checkout procedure. However, the stock availability check currently shows that the Teenage Engineering OP-1 field is out of stock. The system also prompts you to provide an email address to receive a notification when the synthesizer is available in-store.

Teenage Engineering representatives said they would be happy to increase the range of prices for the instrument by moving the minimum price slider down but cannot do so for economic reasons. The company will not sell the tool for less than its cost price, which would result in a loss for the brand. That's why the slider doesn't allow you to choose a more affordable price (e.g., $699 or $99).

The company will run the experiment through June 2025. At the same time, the manufacturer's website will launch similar activities for other Swedish brand products before the end of the year.

We want to make 2025 even more incredible, and will be launching similar promotions on different products before the end of the year, - Teenage Engineering assured.

This is our response to the modern world and the times we live in. This is the perfect time to test crazy ideas and we want to see what happens if people actually "vote with their wallet", - Teenage Engineering summarized.

The brand plans to use this information to better understand the market and the mindset and behavior of customers. It is likely that the manufacturer will adjust the prices of some items in the future to make them more attractive to customers.
