AudioKit Synth One J6 Release - free synthesizer for iOS and iPadOS, inspired by analog instruments.

July 6, 2025

The developers of the AudioKit Synth One J6 virtual synthesizer announced its release on their official website. The instrument was created for educational purposes and is available for free.

According to AudioKit, Synth One J6 took about three years to develop and was created by volunteers and enthusiasts who wanted to design a productive, simple, and understandable virtual instrument for educational purposes. The synthesizer is already being used in schools and educational institutions around the world, from Los Angeles to London to Tokyo.

The developers began working on the synthesizer after conducting a small study of the instruments available in music schools. The developers noticed that many educational institutions actively use iOS and iPadOS smartphones and tablets in the learning process, but the selection of available applications is limited. The issue is not the number of apps in the Apple App Store, but rather the ability to purchase them. Often, municipal educational institutions cannot purchase applications, even if they cost less than $1, the developers noted.

At the same time, AudioKit said that the previously released Synth One synthesizer is not always suitable for educational purposes. The previous tool, which was also distributed for free, is designed for more experienced users and can be difficult for novices to understand. Therefore, the company created another synthesizer with ease of use as one of its most important features.

The Synth One J6 is a creative instrument inspired by famous analog synthesizers. The plugin was developed using machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies. In particular, the instrument's oscillators were trained for hours - note by note - on the sound of vintage synthesizers.

According to the creators, the collected data on which the models were trained helped create productive oscillators. At the same time, the creators were able to capture slight inaccuracies in sound inherent to analog devices.

AudioKit promises lush, warm, and rich sounds. The instrument operates in polyphonic and monophonic modes and features multiple oscillators and three low-frequency LFO oscillators with over 60 pickups for "modulating everything." It is worth noting that the modulation capabilities allow some LFOs to be modulated by other LFOs.

Users also have access to ADSR envelopes for amps and filters, a vintage-style arpeggiator and step sequencer, and an extensive effects section. The latter includes a reverb based on Valhalla DSP plug-ins, analog tape delay, chorus, distortion, and other processing effects. The synthesizer interface features dual assignable touch pads for real-time effects manipulation.

You can control the synthesizer from either a tablet or smartphone screen or MIDI controllers. Synth One J6 supports MIDI Learn, which allows you to assign and automate synthesizer controls. You can use the instrument as a standalone app or as a plug-in for the mobile DAWs GarageBand and Logic Pro X for iPad.

Synth One J6 comes with a collection of over 400 presets. These presets were created by musicians who have collaborated with AudioKit.

The synthesizer is available for free on the Apple App Store. Unfortunately, the program is not available on the Russian version of the store; you will need a different country's account to download it.

It is compatible with smartphones running iOS 15 or later, tablets running iPadOS 15 or later, and Apple Vision virtual reality glasses running visionOS 1.0 or later. Visit AudioKit's official website for more details about the synthesizer.
